We are ready to button up the flywheel and bell housing. I have the engine set at top dead center, so I wanted to install the oil pump and set initial timing on the distributor before moving the crank around.
Before I do all that I thought it would be good to throw the distributor on the Sun machine and check it for specs. It’s a NOS distributor but you never know. Glad I did, at first I couldn’t even get it to spark at the points. I dressed the points and changed the condenser with no change. I had to change out the points to get a spark. After I had spark, I set tension and dwell, and started checking the vacuum springs. First setting at 500 rpms and 0.4 inches met spec with about 2 degrees advance. My battery died on me before I could go to 1000 so back at it tomorrow.
It’s good to check these things. I would have struggled for hours to get the engine to start for the first time.
Checked the distributor at all RPM’s and vacuum loads and it’s advancing to spec. The dwell is really sensitive and tightening the points screws changes it so I had to go back and fine tune. I only had to adjust the secondary spring lobe slightly, the primary was perfect.
The manual only lists dwell % so I had to convert to angle for my meter.
Distro and oil pump are ready to install and set initial timing. The oil pump and cover plate is an area I am contemplating a little sealer on the gaskets. Afraid though that portions might get into the pump so I am leaning toward grease.
Assembly lube, chassis grease, or white lithium grease, for the oil pump. It's the clearances between gear lobes you want to seal, not the gasketed surfaces.
Are you really going to start and run that engine, and mess up all that pretty paint?
Yes, hopefully it’s a good runner. This afternoon we are going to mount the bellhousing after we test fit the transmission to make sure it fits the dowel pins.
Tonight we did a test fit of the transmission to the bellhousing, had to clean a little paint from the dowels so glad we did that.
Mounted the bellhousing and starter cable. The two brackets with grommets for the starter cable, I am assuming the correct position is on the top two bellhousing bolts, anybody know if that is correct? The hole diameter of the cable bracket matched nicely with the top bolt size.
Got the 50 pulled into the shop and ready to be worked on. Depending on the snow tomorrow, we plan to start taking the front clip apart and remove the hood. While we are swapping engines, we are installing a new tank and fuel lines, and replacing some front suspension parts. Should be some good changes.
