Hey all,
I have my truck pretty well finished up but have an odd issue. When the truck starts the fuel sending unit goes to full as it should. After the generator starts to charge the needle falls down to empty and never moves until I restart the truck. It is a 12v conversion with the original dash with a 6v reduced in line. Does the new sending unit need to be grounded with a wire, it has a tab for it but doesnt seem to help if i body ground it
Any thoughts?
Have you removed the sending unit from the tank and measured the resistance values (ohms) as you manually move the float arm up and down. Sending unit simply might be bad.
The stock 6V sending unit does not work on the ohm resistance model common today. An ohm reading is not very helpful in this case. This, along with all sorts of relevant information is all discussed here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post19991574
Bought a Chinese unit that was never quite right, then the needle started indiscriminately moving after a few months. Replaced with one from Taiwan which has worked perfectly. Opened up the Chinese unit and found the “winding” was a few wraps at random spacing. One of my very few Chinese (not Taiwan) part purchases, and my last.
Yes, it’s supposed to be grounded (make sure it’s bare metal and not paint covered).
