I need a water pump for my 64 F100 with a 292. I can't find a 3/4 inch shaft pump but can find a ton of 5/8 shaft pumps. Is the shaft length the same on both pumps so that a car water pump will work for my F100? I have founf a shaft adaptor to go from 5/8 to 3/4 if the length and the pump housings are the same.
The shaft length is different. If you get a car pulley, to go with the car pump, it will work. A pulley from another engine may work but I don't know which, if any is a guaranteed fit. Some are close enough to work with shims.
OK so I ordered a pump from LMC truck. It was listed as fitting 61 to 64 292 V8 Ford F100-250. Just incase I ordered a shaft adaptor to go from 5/8 to 3/4 inch shaft. The pump came and was a 5/8 shaft but from back of housing to the front face where the pulley mounts to measures 4 1/2 inches and the shaft length on my water pump is approx 5 1/8 to 5 1/4 inches. Anyone have ideas of what to do?
You need a y-block car pulley or another pulley with the same depth as a y-block car pulley. I'll go measure one.
A car pulley:
Depth (from the side that contacts the flange) is about 2 5/16"
Groove (for 3/8" Belt in this case) about 5/8" wide
So flange to center of groove is about 2"
Not sure what the standard is for measuring pulleys but flange face to groove center seems like it would be the actual dimension required.
I would get a pulley that is 5.5 to 6" diameter as the standard car pulley is quite large which slows the fan and water pump, which can allow the temperature to creep up in traffic at low speed and idle.
So I contacted LMC Truck to send the water pump back to them as I found a pump that actually is for a 64 292. The LMC pump came in a Dennis Carpenter box. The DC label had part number B9A-8501-BN on the box. The water pump has ECE-8505-B cast in the housing of the pump. I looked to DC at the start to source a pump and they did not list one for a 64 so I was surprised that it came in a DC box. I called DC this morning and gave the tech the DC part number on the box and he said no this does not fit a 64 F100 292 and he did not know why LMC was selling this to fit. Since this is listed as fitting a 64 but does not I requested a 100% refund on part and shipping. LMC truck told me they would not refund my shipping cost of 30 dollars for the pump only the cost of the part. I requested that they conference DC in on a call to verify LMC was listing this wrong and they refused to do that. I talked to 3 different people and after arguing with them for 15 minutes they finally decide to go beyond policy as if they were doing me a favor even though they have it listed wrong and they would refund 100% of my money and send a return label for the pump at their cost. They originally wanted me to send it back at my expense also. I will never ever do business with LMC again.
It is incorrect because of the shaft difference. However, I don't believe a correct pump is available, which makes the car pump the only option outside of sourcing an expensive NOS pump, which has hopefully been stored well so that it actually works, having yours rebuilt or finding a, hopefully good, used one.
It's definitely advertised incorrectly if it is indicated to be a direct replacement. However, it works perfectly with a matching pulley (I've been using a car pump for 20 years) and they should indicate that.
LMC is in the wrong and to the best of my knowledge, so is everyone else since it always seems to be the 5/8" shaft pump sold for trucks. Be prepared for any other you order to be the same.
Here are the two side by side. The left one is the 5/8 shaft and the has a car part number on it with a 4 1/2 inch shaft length. The right one is the 3/4 inch shaft with a 4 3/4 inch shaft length. It is a rebuild as is the DC/ LMC pump is. It came from a rebuilder in Oregon and they said they had 5 in stock. It was 225 dollars with 50 refunded for the core if I choose to send it back. I am going to keep mine and have it rebuilt for 2 reasons. I don't want to go through this again and it is the original pump with the truck part number on it
Got curious today and went on NPD website to look at pumps. The actually have a disclaimer that says this is a car pump and you will need to find a car pulley to use this on a truck. It also says depending on the pulley it may slow the pump and cause overheating as Charley said. Macs needs to do this also.
I also have been looking for a truck water pump for my 1964 F100. I found that car pumps were everywhere cheap and truck pumps almost non existent and expensive. I bought a car pump and 5/8 I.d to 3/4 o.d. bushing for the shaft. A machinist friend made a spacer so the truck pulley can be retained.
