One more thing I just noticed was that when I am sitting in park I can turn OD on and off but as soon as I put it in D I’m unable to do change it anymore—not sure if that’s how it always was at low speeds but figured I’d mention it anyway
Put it all together and found that it still will drive forwards as long as I want in D, 2, and 1 at idle speed, but when I give it throttle the engine speeds up and the truck keeps moving idle speed. Yet in reverse it performs perfectly. Any ideas on what to check next?
OK, now it is acting totally different than it was before. Before this time you said there was no throttle response and it stayed at idle speed. Now the engine revs, but the truck doesn't move. Now there is a clutch slipping, I think you've finished this trans. It's time for a new one.

That is most likely a damaged wire in the steering column where it enters the shifter handle.

Ok, I just realized that the way I explained it the first time was wrong. What it is doing now (engine revs with no response) is exactly what it was doing the first time too.
I had really been hoping this wouldn’t be the case because I wanted to save up a bit more and get a BTS trans but it looks like that won’t happen. What would you suggest doing? Should I go to a shop and have it rebuilt? Or try to have it replaced?
You can buy a used trans, rebuild the one you have. You can also exchange the one you have for a rebuilt or remanufactured trans. I don't have a preference.

Find a way to swing a BTS. You will be much happier in the long run.
BTS sells a very expensive T-shirt, but he gives away a free built transmission with it!
Brian is the top dog in the 4R100 rebuilding market among the other choices. But, if you cannot afford one or it just isn't the right time, no one will fault you for that. Perhaps state your rough location and someone can recommend a reputable shop for a rebuilt transmission. If you are in the southeast at all, there are a couple of places I can think of right off the top of my head.

It was a little painful but after seeing so much good stuff about Brian on here I decided to bite the bullet and buy from him--the fact that he's charging $5k before shipping and is still backlogged over a month is shocking but I assume it is also a testament to the quality of his products. Thanks guys for your help in all of this, it's awesome to have such a great resource right here!

The BTS is right in the center of the bullseye of the "buy once, cry once" target. You will not be disappointed with the BTS 4R100.
