Joe Abbin wrote the article and is their Flathead Engine Advisor. He says the oil filter was introduced as standard in 1946. He says as has been stated here that most of the oil is not filtered in one pass but he has tests that say at highway speeds 100 per cent of the oil is filtered in 5 minutes.
My opinion is to stop trying to see or make these old trucks through the lens of todays auto technology. Enjoy it how and why it worked then. Thats the fun part for me at least.
