I just bought a 98 Expy that is in great shape. The only thing is, the air bag light flashes on start up and stays on continuously. I realize the manual says take to dealer but does anyone know what this means? Did the bags deploy once? Any self diagnostic I can perform? Thanks.
I had this happen after I went flying through some puddles once. I was getting 5 flashes followed by 2 flashes, then it would stay lit. I had it reset and if my memory still serves me I think it was caused by a "low voltage condition". I think you can reset it by turning the key off and on some 255 times. I may be wrong there. It is a good idea to get the code and have it checked and reset because you may need it sometime. HTH.
I have this Exact probelm on my 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer. The problem is definelty not caused by the bags deploying. I bought my truck when it was 8 months old, and the light started flashing about a year after that.
Also I don;t think that starting the truck 255 times will reset it. I drive the Expy everday, and the light has been on for almost 4 years.
I called my local Ford dealer about a month ago, he said the problem was caused by a bad connection by the sensors. I never bothered bringing it in.
Ford does have a TSB out on it, so if you go to the dealer they should try to fix it for free!! Hope this helps.
P.S. Just DONT try fixing it yourself, you don;t want to accidently deploy those air bags, they are $400 each.
