F100 identification

Hello all some of you may remember my post asking the value of my dads f100 which I believe to be a 54 but I cannot confirm. Im looking for some way to find a stamping or something to help me figure out the exact year or vin something my dad bought it with a bill of sale and we’re looking to sell it the same way but I’d like to at least be able to say what year the truck is for sure. And before I get bombarded with answers based on the pictures I’ll post the hood grill did not come with the truck we bought them for him separately. I’ve also looked in glove box and door jambs and under the hood for any kind of ID tag or standings and have found nothing any other spots to look or info would be appreciated.

If the frame has not been modified (front clip replaced, etc.) there should be a serial number stamped on the frame rail. (yellow box) On '53s it is sometimes on the front cross member. (red box)

There will be a star shape stamped before and after the number.

Be careful cleaning the frame. Some of them are not stamped very deep and can be easily sanded off.

You can decode the number here: 1953-1959 Ford VIN Decoder - VINmagic.com

For the record, not my frame. But it does belong to a member here, I just can't remember which one.

I say it's a 1955 model. It has the starter solenoid on the firewall. 53 and 54 models had the solenoid on the frame unless it's a late build 54 model like my 54. The wiring harness goes the whole way to the solenoid rather than a junction block like on 53 and 54 models, unless it's a late build 54 like mine. And the 'shadow' of the hood side emblem looks like a 55 emblem, although I think you said the hood was replaced.

If there is no data plate tag on the inside of the glove box door, then the place to look is on the top of the right side frame rail. I've never seen mine. Others will be along to give you more exact place to find it.
Edit: looks like Ken, Effie Trucker, beat me to it, with a picture with boxes.

Here’s a picture of my ‘54. You can see the junction terminal block that Abe is talking about. My starter solenoid is on the frame down by the battery. Abe’s truck was built at the same plant as mine, but about 2 months later. Dennis

After you figure out what you're going to sell it for, etc , you should post it on this site, you will get lots of exposure, looks like a pretty good body! Also post your location. Good luck!

54 trucks used cloth coated wire. 1955 was the first year for plastic coated wiring.

So I attempted to look real quick for the stamp on the frame with no immediate luck. Someone installed different cross member to hold the 351 Windsor in so I’m hoping that the stamping is not gone as I can’t find anything else that will lead to me the correct year to classify the truck as. Will post pictures

On my 55 the stamp is on top of the frame rail aft of the axle location in a spot that is covered by the inner fender sheet metal. It can only be seen from inside the fender well looking in the gap between the inner fender and the frame. I was able find it by pulling the wheel and first clearing dirt off the top of the frame with a finger and then getting an inspection mirror in there.

I just dug up a photograph. It is just forward of the top frame rivet that attaches the rear engine/transmission cross member.

There should be another stamping on top of the frame rail mid point between the running board brackets as well..on 56's anyway..

Such inconsistency is one of the endearing aspects of this hobby. I have recently inspected my bare '55 frame with a fine-toothed wire brush. Definitely only one stamp, circled in red below.

The VIN stamp. I left it unpainted so as not to risk obscuring it.

This truck regardless of the year, without a title is just another parts truck. I wouldn’t put a nickel into a rebuild without a title.
