I installed Posies super slide leaf springs on my 49 F1. Now steering wheel is off about 45 degrees. Can I remove and reclock steering wheel to correct position? Also how does horn button come off? It will move back and forth a 1/4" but won't release when pushing and turning ccw. I'm going to try one of those jar lid grippers to get more traction.
Yes, you could pull the wheel and re-clock it. I think i i would try to get the front end aligned first though. Some people get very close with turning the steering wheel lock to lock while counting the turns to find your middle point. Then you verify your pitman arm is pointing 90 degrees straight down. If all of that is correct pull your steering wheel and reseat it so it is clocked correctly.
The horn button should pop off with a CCW turn. You may need to persuade it a little by prying around it with a very small screwdriver. There should be a horn contact spring right under the horn button, next you'll probably have to remove the horn wire by disconnecting it at the bottom of the steering box, then pull it up through the drive shaft. Next would be removing the horn contact plate, gently twist it with a small pair of pump pliers. It fits very tight. Now remove the cup the contact plate sits on top of by removing the steering wheel nut. That part may be difficult. Use plenty of penetrating oil, and I usually use an impact wrench while holding the steering wheel going slow to get it loose. Once the nut is off remove the horn contact cup, then thread the nut you just removed back on the shaft, just so it covers the end of the shaft. You will want to do this to prevent the puller from distorting or damaging the end of the steering shaft. Before using the puller you may want to clean out with a repair tap the threaded holes where the puller bolts thread into. Set up your puller and slowly crank it down making sure the pullers center bolt is not wandering, until the steering wheel pops off. If you get it real tight and it is still now coming off, smack the end of the puller bolt with a hammer. Once the steering wheel is pulled off, re-center it and push it back on, and tighten the steering wheel shaft nut. Before putting it all back together I take it for a short ride to make sure the steering wheel is where I want it. Try it out in a parking lot and on the crowned highway. You might want to pull it off again and split the difference making any differences in straight ahead steering wheel position much less noticeable.
Hope this helps!
As instructed above, be very careful of pulling. Despite my being careful and replacing the nut on the shaft before pulling, I pulled to much with the puller and ended up taking off the threads of the shaft in the nut. Thankfully, I was able to rethread it (and you are lucky that F1 parts are available unlike the larger trucks):
Thanks for all the help. I got it apart without breaking anything. Patience is helpful. I had to MacGyver a rope sling around the steering wheel to work with my 3 arm puller, there were no holes in the steering wheel .
