I'm building a 1977 Highboy on a 76 frame. Dual caliper front disc .I am using a 77 F-250 camper special 2wd cab and the wiring harness. This wiring and cab is set up for Cruise control. I want to keep the cruise in this truck, it is the Ford unit for a 460. I am using a C6 behind a 390. I have done some research on boosters. There was not a listing for 76 with cruise and dual pistons for a 4x4. Most boosters are out of stock anyway. I have both styles of booster brackets. I do plan to keep the old style cast M/C 1 1/4" bore. Any one have a suggestion for a booster that will work on this build ? Can some one explain why the booster rods are different for the cruise ?
I don't think anyone outside of the commitees that designed these things could ever figure out why there were so many combinations of booster, booster rod, pedal and pivot assemblies, and the many combinations thereof!
Crazy stuff to give us headaches later.
But there have been a few here that have utilized later model boosters from the '90's and 2000's I think, that might be able to shed some light. What tire size will you be working with?
Reason I ask about tires is that you might consider hydro-boost instead of vacuum. It's more expensive, but more compact and powerful too. And perhaps one of the only games in town if you don't find a booster that's compatible with your setup.
Good luck. This whole booster debacle is turning into a real pain. I'm lucky in that I already have the desirable F350 booster on my truck, so I can take it over to my local booster rebuilder and they can make it hopefully as good as new. But I'm still going to try out a hydroboost setup from my company to see if it works with my pedal and rod setup. Don't know if I have one of the common ones or not, but I'll figure it out I think.
I think the deal with the boosters it the rod that protrudes into the cab. If it has a squared off flat back where it hooks to the brake pedal it will work with the small block type brake light switch. If it is rounded you need the plunger type switch with the tab mounted on the pedal. I pulled the cruise from a 460 SCS and installed it on my 78 F150, the harness had provisions for both types of brake switches. My truck had the block type so I left the plunger switch connector empty. Worked fine. Hope this makes sense.
