I went to change injectors on my early '99 7.3L and pulled one with a blow-out like it was shot from the inside out by a .22 right above the 4 oil ports towards the bottom of the injector. What the heck caused this and is there anything I need to look at before reinstalling the new one?
Matt at Bitterroot Diesel is a newer sponsor here on the FTE and is our resident expert on injectors. I have tagged him below in hopes that he has some words of advice for you.
@Bitterroot Diesel , any thoughts, ideas or suggestions for one of the newest members to the FTE?
I wouldn't still have my truck on the road if I haven't been searching this site for the last 10 years. Recently replaced the front end and clutch with the insight from here, along with 1/2 dozen no start issues/ dyeing on the road over that time. So, a big over-due thanks for everyone on this site!
Colorado,
the cup has a 1/8" 'ish deep by 1/4" cut out in the very top.
It had lost a lot of power and got such high egt's that I couldn't keep highway speed recently. The dramatic difference In drivability, I assume, would coincide with this blow-out.
Z31- Found a few problems, including "O" rings, while changing out all the injectors. This is the one that perplexed me, wondering if I should put everything back together yet, or go deeper
Since you have an early 99 and you have the injectors out you might as will do the cups, Then you can use any coolant that you want.
At the very least I would replace that one cup that is damaged…but if you need to rent the tool and everything’s already apart I would just do them all.
Colorado:
Any help finding a post on how to do the cups would be appreciated. And where would you rent the tool? It's not an Autozone typical rental.
Thanks

I doubt it, but the company I've been working with has been great about their responses so far and are supposed to get back to me on Monday, I e-mailed them at 5:45 CST on a Saturday and they called me within 15 minuets . Mostly it was a total lack of power and very high EGT's that turned me on to the problem, the only noticeable sound was the lack of turbo whine.
