Long shot I've asked this question a couple times I think but going to see if anyone has any insight.
my DEMON 2000 is still down for the count. Followed prescribed solutions from a tech. Replaced. Keys, transceiver, gauges, AND pcm with a "plug and play" pcm. Attempted to marry and techs computer comes back no comm.
note: we started with keys and gauges and it started right up great for 2 days and quit. Tech came back and said pcm is bad.
anyhoodles.
I have a 99 that just lost 3rd and over drive. So will the pcm and computer run the 2000.
I'm willing to swap everything.
the only difference I see is the 2000 is COP and the the 99 has 2 coil packs one on each bank.
I'm game to try it anyway and get an answer at this point.
With pcms being obsolete aftermarket providers are flashing the pcms to run others. We ordered a vin matched pcm that came in under a different family/part number (according to the tech it's not working we are getting a second opinion on that asap)
so the technicality of the question is wiring wise on the engine are the cops wired the same as the coil packs. I'd be swapping full pcm, cluster, tumbler, bcm on them. Pin wise they look the same. I guess ultimately the engine harness wouldn't be too hard to swap if need be.
I guess ultimately the engine harness wouldn't be too hard to swap if need be.
The most notable difference is the COP version has 8 coil outputs while the coil pack version only has 4. That's because coil packs fire 2 cylinders each and COPs only 1.
so spit balling here. Pull the coil packs, and engine harness at the same time and swap to 2000, in theory it should run the injectors the same and they both still run on pre and post o2s. There may be some engine turning that will run different but over all the engine should still function.
As Alloro pointed out, the ‘99, with the coil packs, fires two sparkplugs at a time.
It is known as a “Wasted Spark” ignition system.
Each Coil pack has four spark plug wires but ONLY two control wires.
Each control wire is pulled to ground once per revolution, but fires TWO spark plugs.
One spark will go to a cylinder that is on the “power” stroke and the other spark will be “wasted” as its companion cylinder will be on its exhaust stroke. (But on the next engine revolution the cylinder roles will be reversed.)
So the ‘99’s PCM uses only four control wires to control the spark for eight cylinders.
The 2000’s ignition system, with its eight COPs has eight control wires.
Its PCM pulls each control wire to ground once EVERY OTHER revolution.
So if you are planning on using the ‘99’s wasted spark computer to run the coil packs on the 2000 with the ‘99’s harness, it should be doable.
Years ago, we went the other way when my son put a 2004 Mercury Sable 3.0 wasted spark engine into his ‘98 Contour SVT which had the COP ignition. He kept the Sable’s wasted spark ignition but had to get creative with the ignition harness on the Sable so as not to overload the ignition drivers in the ‘98s PCM.
That's what Ithought. They're in two different cities, I need the trucks side by side to finish programming and fixing them. Then probably going to dump them once they're both running and driving (well maybe not the 2000 since at that point everything will be new on it)
