2020 F250 7.3 10 Speed Transmission Defect

I recently purchased a 2020 F250 SD with a 7.3 gasser with the Gen 1 10 speed transmission on 19 Sep 2020. After hearing a metal to metal rubbing noise coming from what I thought was the engine I scheduled an appointment at my local Ford dealer (24Sep2020). To my surprise the mechanic came back and told me I needed a new transmission..... my truck had around 650 miles on it. He explained to me that the Gen 1 ten speeds have a chain driven pump inside them causing the metal to metal sound meaning thats going to be alot of metal shavings pooling inside her. He asked me to be patient and told me that Ford is replacing these Gen 1 Transmissions with a Gen 2 and I happen to be 3rd in line for one here in my geographical location. The truck can still be driven with the Gen 1 until the Gen 2 comes in apparently. I made a you tube video about it and a few have thanked me and even said they have the same problem and his dealer didn't know what to do. He forwarded my video to them and got them on the right track. If you have a metal to metal rubbing sound and your not sure why, make sure you get it checked out you may need a new transmission in your brand new truck as well. Very disappointing and im hoping Ford will make it right. i let go of a great Ram to join the Ford family.

Interestingly enough, another FTE member @vitacura , had the same thing happen, on the same truck (same color even, for a bit of Twilight Zone effect) on his dark blue 2020 7.3L gas F-250 with only 600 miles on the odometer. Heard a noise. Took it in. Needs a new 10 speed transmission.

That's a real drag, but if Ford is aggressive in replacing any problems trannies, then its not too bad. There are quite a few of these trannies on the road running great and some with high mileage.

Nah........on these 2020’s they gotta pull the tranny to lift the cab. Lifting the cab is an internet horror story. It makes for easy access to do engine work, etc. All the shop need is proper equipment, and it takes less time than laying over you fenders, scratching hell out of your paint, etc. And BTW.....it is not just Fords they do that with either.

I had mine changed out at 1500 miles recently. There was a leak from the torque converter coming out of the bellhousing, dont recall any strange noises. Once they received the replacement trans from ford it was a really quick install, less than a day, cab did not come off. After it was replaced I literally drove straight to my house and hooked a 8k camper to it and towed 1k miles round trip with no issues or leaks so I think the problem is resolved. Good luck they will make it right but it is annoying to deal with for sure. I also came from a Ram 2500 Cummins that never let me down, this is my first Ford truck so not a great start, hoping its the last major issue.

Has this seemed to be only on the 7.3l gassers? I am just picking up a 2020 f250 with the 6.7l diesel soon - is the tranny issue across the board with the 10 speed or has it just been with the gassers?

I believe the gas & diesel trannys are the same except the diesel has a couple or few more clutch plates from what ive read. If you truck was built in mid march or later. You should have a job 2 build

So it's safe to assume any trucks getting built now will have a gen 2 tranny?

How can one determine if one has a "Gen1" or "Gen2" 10 speed transmission? Is it solely based on Job 1 (pre March) or Job 2 (post March), or something else? Any identifiers?
(asking for a friend)

chain drive pump.. not sure that sounds like a good thing. I thought the 10 speed was the 6 speed from the f-150 with more clutches etc to handle the power of the new 7.3 or the 6.7.. just have to ask ,,, how many other transmission manf use chain drive for the pump vs the good ole fashion gear drive.. ??

another reason I am not a fan of the first year of something like engine, transmission etc.. give it a year or two
