got a stock heights 88 f250 and looking to get some bigger tires but don't want to clearance anything, the guy at discount tire says I should go with 265/75r16 but all my friends have 285's on theres but they never give me any ideas or answers so im stuck in the middle and don't know what to go with
You can go with 265/75 with no issues at all. You can go with 285/70 with no issues but have a more limited tire selection. (May rub on springs at full lock depending on wheels) 285/75 will require some clearance work.
I'd stick with 265s. The brakes are marginal on these things as it is. No point in adding more leverage on the brakes with a bigger tire. Also, with the 3.55 gear, bigger tires are going to make it feel more lethargic.
I run 265's on my '97 F350 4X4, SRW, RC, 460, ZF5, 4.10, Gear Vendor, factory Alcoa wheels. Looks good. I've seen 285's on the Alcoa's, which are 7" wide...not wide enough for 285's, which should be on an 8 or 9" wide rim...they look pinched in at the bead when on 7" wide rim...I suspect wear or handling may less than optimal as well.
