Disc Brake Conversion

Got an issue that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I decided to do a rear disc brake conversation on my 1979 F250 4X4, so I purchased a kit from Ruffstuff Specialties. Here is the kit purchased -https://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/R2054.html

This evening I put the new rotors on the hubs so that I can drive in the new wheel studs, yet the knurled end isn't long enough to reach the hub. The current wheel studs I have that came on my truck are Dorman part # 610-279.

In the description of this kit, Ruffstuff does state that if the wheels studs are not long enough, then use wheel studs from a dually or Dorman part # 610-180. Easy enough, however, after looking into the studs they suggest I need, I realize they are shorter than what I currently have on my truck.

Here are the wheel stud specs for what I have and what Ruffstuff states I need.

Dorman 610-279 (what I currently have on my truck, which are too short)
  • Thread Size: 1/2-20 Inch
  • Knurl Diameter in/mm: 0.608 Inch
  • Length in/mm: 2.25 Inch
  • Shoulder Length in/mm: 0.938 Inch
  • Thread Handing: Right Hand Thread

Dorman 610-180 (what ruffstuff says to use if my current studs are not long enough)
  • Thread Size: 9/16-18 Inch
  • Knurl Diameter in/mm: 0.625 Inch
  • Length in/mm: 2.125 Inch
  • Shoulder Length in/mm: 0.906 Inch
  • Thread Handing: Right Hand Thread
I don't want to buy the studs they say to get, because obviously they are shorter than what I currently have.

Has anyone ever done a disc conversion? What studs did you use?

Attached is a picture of my current stud (610-279) going through the new rotor.

Thanks for any help!

Not only are the 610-180's shorter, but the knurl size etc are incompatible.

Accurately measure the thickness of both the disc rotor and the drum rotor mounting faces.

If they are the same, then no problem, the 610-279's will work.

If they are not the same, to the extent that the knurl will not engage the hub sufficiently, and thus compromise safety, I would ask Ruffstuff to advise thoroughly and correctly.

The 610-279 doesn't even begin to engage the hub. Yesterday I called Ruffstuff and explained my issue, but the guy on the other end was no help at all. Guess I'm gonna see if I can request a refund and hopefully not have to eat $340

Your thread caught my eye because it's the first SRW disc conversion thread, out of many, that encountered stud issues.

Maybe do a search here in FTE for conversions to see what others did.

I just checked the notes from my conversion, but I didn't note the mounting face thicknesses.

The face thickness differences would be the only thing preventing the correct stud fitment.

Purely fr info, and if you're curious, weigh the disc rotor and drum rotor, and you'll find the weight difference highly advertised is insignificant.

If a mechanical engineer confirms that a 0.625'' knurl will fit into 0.608'', then 610-228 studs might work.

Or, return the conversion kit stating that it is ''not fit for the purpose'', and you will legally be entitled to a refund. (If you're lucky, your credit card company offers 'charge backs'.)

I'm also not being much help !

The hub I have is pictured in post 2 here :

The hub you most likely have is pictured here in post 8, way, way, down in post 8 :

Note the studs used !!

The hubs may in fact be identical, but they look different in those pictures.

I just kind of went thru this with my 86, I recommend taking your stud to the parts store and see if they have a longer stud that will work.
I bought 2 packs of 610-300 I thought would work and they didn't so I took my original stud in and found a good match.
Now I have 2 packs of studs I have no idea what to do with. I don't think they will fit my f150 and returning them doesn't make much cents..
