I have a 1989 F350, 4×4, 7.5L and the speedometer/odometer just went out. No other gauges are malfunctioning. The cable looks fine and is still connected to the transfer case which leads me to believe it is the speedometer gear. However, in looking for a replacement speedometer gear, I'm finding I might need to replace the entire cable with gear attached. I have found results to replace just the gear but I have no idea how many teeth the gear should have.
Any clarification as to whether I can change just the gear or if it needs the entire cable would be great and even better to know how many teeth the gear should have. Thanks y'all.
Is there anyway to know what should be in it so I can order the part before trying to change it?
It should be easy to pull the speedometer gear out of the transfer case to check the color. Probably a holder and a bolt that takes a 7/16 wrench. then jerk the end of the cable out. Easy to reinsert the cable and gear and replace the holder and bolt.
When you have access to the gear, if you have an assistant, one person turn the gear counterclockwise i believe and one person watch for a slight movement of the speedometer needle. Obviously if the needle moves the cable is good.
There is always a chance the plastic gear has worn the steel cogs that drive it and the speedometer won't work even with a good gear and cable.
My '89 4x4 speedo started doing wacky things but it turned out that the output yoke nut was loose allowing the driven gear to move away from the drive gear. Check the output yoke nut for tightness before major surgery.
