I have an 00 Expedition 2wd XLT with a 4.6 and 4r70 trans. I am experiencing a vibration felt in the seats and the floor while driving at a constant speed of 70 mph. Usually happens while going up small uphills with the cruise on. The engine is under a small load when this happens. When going down hill with the cruise still on the vibration goes away. The vibration feels like you are driving over the wake up strips on the side of the highway, it can actually be heard as well as felt. Has anyone had this happen?
I have the same problem! I just signed up today and was browsing the threads looking for someone with a similar problem. I have an AWD '00 XLT w/ 4.6L but my vibration is not as bad. It gets worse under load, and goes away as soon as it shifts out of Overdrive or I start decending a hill. I can feel it in the pedal and it's more of an audible noise than a harsh vibration.
Anyone else have this problem, or better yet, know the solution?
A very common problem with Expys (and other Fords) is with the torque convertor. A simple fluid flush and refill generally rights the problem. If your fluid is more than 30K miles old try that first.
If the torque coverter/tranny flush doesn't solve it look for worn motor mounts, tranny mounts, and driveshaft joints, all of which will cause vibration when under load but go away when not under load.
Thanks for the tips. I have 55k on the truck, and had the trans flushed around 37k. I may flush it again to see if that helps, if not, I will do a more thorough check on joints, mounts, etc.
I have 60k on mine. Trans fluid never changed yet. Will change it now! What brand of mercon v is best? Could someone tell me the proper method to refill the trans when the torque converter has been drained? I have read many different ways, I just want to know the right way. Thanks again.
I had mine done at a full service shop where they pump out the old and pump in the new...sort of a power-flush.
FYI, depending on what warranty you have (if any), Ford will try very hard to negate your claim if your transmission fails and you haven't changed the tranny fluid every 30k miles. It's in your owners manual as part of the preventative maintanence schedule. I had a hard fight with Ford ESP when I cooked the tranny in my Explorer that had 37k on it.
I had a 98 and the owners manual said not to change the tranny fliud until 100k. I actually waited until 99k to change it and everything was fine. Now the trasnfer case and differential are different stories they need it at least every 30k
