Fuel gauge

My gas gauge doesn’t work, and I’m trying to troubleshoot.

When you turn the key on, the gauge immediately goes to full, and then very slowly goes back to empty, takes about 30 seconds to go all the way back down to empty.

As a test, I took the connector off of the top of the sending unit and grounded it to the tank, and the gauge goes full and stays full.

What does this mean?

I just want to verify that the problem is definitely the sending unit before I go ordering a new one.

Thanks!

Thanks but what does that mean? Replace ALL grounds? Can you be more specific? I know enough about electronics to know that a bad ground will cause all kind of problems, but to say “replace all grounds” isn’t really helping me to narrow down the issue.

Here is the back of a custom cab sweep speedo instrument cluster - you may have the standard cab cluster so this may not be helpful

Thanks, so if I replace this ground wire you think I’ll be good? I’ll give it a shot

just use a temporary jumper as ground or check continuity with test light or ohm meter If it works right with jumper or has resistance then redo that ground

Check ground from engine to battery, engine to cab, cab to gauge cluster, and finally fuel sending unit. Sorry for not being specific!

I added a ground directly from the sender to the cab floor, and also directly from gauge cluster to the firewall.

Just pulled the sending unit, the float was full of gas, so I’m guessing a replacement is in order. Anyone have a link to a cheap one? I found one online for $45 but that seems pretty high for a sending unit. Thanks!

The entire sending unit assembly is going to be at least $40. However, you can try just replacing the float - available for $5:
https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/en/...g-unit-float-p
if you manually move the float arm and the gauge reads correctly then just the float will work - just remember to use a jumper wire for ground while you check with the unit out of the tank

When you buy the new float be sure and get a new gasket and the "O" rings for the screws or you will be smelling gas fumes. If you want to check the fuel sender with an OHM meter while it is out. It should read 8 to 12 ohm's all the way up "full" and 60 to 86 ohm's empty.
