I attempted to remove my starter yesterday. The bolts are removed but the starter will not come out. I can separate it from the block at the bottom about 3/16” but it snaps back on when I remove the screwdriver that I’m prying it out with.. I think the Bendix gear may be stuck, but I’ve never seen that happen. Does anyone have any ideas.. my next step will probably be to beat it politely with a small sledge.7
All 3 bolts are out. I don’t think the starter would separate from the block otherwise bu I’m not sure about that.
I don’t know anything about a magnetic switch but the batteries are disconnected.
I’ve pulled a bunch of starters in my life from motorcycles to greyhound busses and I’ve never seen this before
thanks for your ideas
I know that top bolt can be a real PIA but IF you have all 3 bolts out I cannot imagine the bendix being seized to the ring gear, but my guess is IF it is then you have bigger issues than just the starter.
possibly you can remove the bell housing inspection plate and see what is going on.
you might try Bar the engine over too.
Sounds like the Bendix is unwound and bound on the ring gear, if I remember right I ran into that on something years ago. Not being there, so I'm not in the know but I'd suggest you reinstall the starter bolts, fire up the engine if the starter works, that should kick the Bendix drive back in, then shut it down and see if the starter can now be removed.
Thanks to all of you. Yesterday I gently knocked the starter housing with a short 3 pound sledge and it fell out, probably trying to crush me for my recent conversations with it. I can’t see anything unusual and a fishing trip with my magnet didn’t turn up anything broken in the bellhousing. I wish I could tell you all what was wrong, but I’m still baffled.
