Ford better not dork this one up as F-150s represent 110%-120% of the company's overall profits -- meaning they lose money almost everywhere else (except North America) and on most of their other vehicle models. As a truck buyer I'm tired of subsidizing some Ford vehicle buyer (e.g. EcoSport) over in China, elsewhere.
I read a Car and Driver article that pretty much said Ford plans to sell data gathered by the trucks new Sync 4 system. The purpose would be to recommend dealer services and target advertising on the screen based on where you have been or where you are going, how you drive etc. if this is true, I have a huge problem with that. My phone does that already, i don’t need a vehicle that I spend $50,000 plus for doing that too.

Yep, insurance goes up because you exceeded the speed limit by more than 10%, miles driven, time of day used etc. Warranty denied for various reasons based on data collected. The possibilities are endless.
The upside it that DTCs, misfires, strange shifting etc would all be stored to a cloud and the dealer would no longer say that they couldn’t reproduce the issue.
How much will Ford charge independent shops for the new diagnostic software needed? Will The owners Of these new trucks be forced to use a dealer for everything and be forced to have software updates like Tesla owners? Those of you who use tuners or Forscan will probably be SOL.

Only good thing to come from this is that engine problems would be stored, the rest of it could be very bad for owners and independent repair shops. John Deere is doing something similar with the software on their newer equipment, last I heard they wouldn't sell the stuff to independent shops thus requiring you to go to a Deere dealer.
ETA. What is it with Ford and those gaudy vertical fender badges? That's the one thing I really don't care for on my super duty. I also see Ford doesn't seem to be offering wheel flares so now we have to go to the aftermarket or deal with chipped up wheel well lips
I read about the John Deere issue. Owners can’t even retune them and have no way to bypass anything. Updates happen whether the owner wants them or not. The concern is that JD is using GPS info, operating times and dates, etc to determine when a farmer plants, maintains and harvests, even how deep the plow goes. This info could be sold to corporate interests who could use it to their advantage when acquiring neighboring land. Also, in some instances warranties are being denied and equipment is being shut down because there was a violation of the buyers user agreements. Many late model JD owners don’t feel like they own their equipment anymore Independent shops can’t/wont work on them and they can’t trade for anything buy a JD. To make matters worse, the equipment costs so much that the very land itself is the collateral.
I will say right now, if the new Ford trucks are going to operate in a similar manner as Tesla, and to a lesser extent JD, I wont buy one again. Let’s hope that Car and Driver is wrong about this, but they are very well respected.
I have two big issues with the new trucks. The interior facing camera and the exterior camera. With the addition of the Sync 4 and the interior camera this footage is likely to be stored along with the exterior camera in real-time. I can fully see this being used against you. These wireless updates are also wireless uploads of data capture and I would be curious what data is sent. If its like the GM's and Tesla its a plentiful amount of data and driving logs.
This looks more and more like Microsoft's Window 10 system. After installing the first thing you do is turn off all data gathering options, second, find the module that uploads all of this data once per week (make sure it never has the ability to run again). l'm sure any new F150 will have to come out with opt in/out options on all of this data gathering. If they don't, there will be many hacks available to be used and it will make trouble shooting a nightmare for any Tech at the local dealership.

I sorta like the new 150 more than I thought I would. Would I buy it? Absolutely not!!!!! OTA, cylinder deactivation, and the other electronics are a deal breaker for me. I don't even use the stuff on the one I've got. Very glad I got a 2020, now just have to make it last for awhile.

Maybe if Ford makes all of their computerry stuff super reliable they can get into the business of building PCs that are more reliable than Windows10 has been.
. . . then after that, their natural evolution into gaming consoles will hopefully include the first really realistic gaming steering wheels.
