I'm planning on replacing the oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket. The new oil pan gasket I bought is a one piece gasket. Which would you change first? Timing cover then oil pan, or oil pan then timing cover?
The oil pan has to be lowered some in order to pull the timing cover. I just did this on my '95 Eddie Bauer, 302, 4x4.
I would drop the pan, do timing cover, then gasket. Lots of crap wants to fall in when you pull the cover.
You can pull the timing cover without dropping the pan. You only have to remove the front 4 oil pan bolts and the timing cover will separate from it.
If you have a 1 piece oil pan gasket, you have to do the timing cover first, and then put the pan on. Otherwise you will have one hell of a time getting the timing cover back in place.
