'01 4L 4x4 5spd Rgr

I've been thinking about selling my '68 Scout 266v8 Warner T-90 3spd, w/Dana 20 T-case, Dana 30 F & Dana 44 R with 4:27 ratios and my 4L 2wd auto '97 Ranger and getting a '01 4L 4x4 5spd Rgr.

What are the downsides to the '01 Rgr drivetrain combo I mentioned?

My wife purchased a new '00 Ford Focus based on the Focus' European Car of the Year '99 status. I am not interested in repeating the recall and maintenance fiasco that the '00 Focus brought down upon us.

Welcome to FTE!!

I'm sure you will get the ups and downs on the Rangers but Ithink it will be hard for most of us to compare it to the Scout.

I have an 01 ranger XLT reg cab, 5 speed 2.3L engine.
I have about 65000 miles on it with just routine maintance done.

the truck as delivered has extremely disappointing pickup (meaning none) after putting in a Gibson cat back system into it and Volant air intake system in, it has a lot of pickup even going up steep hills.

The truck has treated me very well so far with no omnious letters from ford telling me to bring it in.

you can also check out www.ford-trucks.com all rangers all the time.

"I think it will be hard for most of us to compare it to the Scout."

It is good also to see that with a bit of extra technology that the smaller Rgr engines can be pushed to be more effective and I bet more efficient.

The '68 Scout 800 can be fun, but the technology in it isn't much different than what was on my '51 3/4T GMC. My '97 Ranger is like a luxuary ride compared to the Scout, carries my dogs and canoe more reliably and comfortably over long distances too. Don't even mention gas mileage with the Scout, you would think I was driving a '66 Hemi Belvedere for the gas the Scout slurps. My 4L '97 Rgr gets twice the mileage. But mileage and comfort aren't the Scout's forte', even though mine is stock except for 30" tires, SS dual exhaust and updated distributor.

That said, the power upgrade in the '01 4L has me intrigued. I admire good technology efficiently applied at a fair price. If folks who know Rgrs give it a more or less biased thumbs up I will look even closer. Too bad the folks at Ford don't put a high torque little diesel in the Ranger 4x4. I see Dodge has a new Mercedes van with a strong 5 cyl 2.7L TD diesel in its stable now, that under load gets an est 30 mpg at 243ft lbs of torque@1600 rpms.

The reported 29% increase in HP out of the '01 Rger 4L over its predecessor is quite a jump. Anyone know how it was done? Anyone know what is stopping the 4L from getting another jump in HP or is a future HP jump out of that engine hampered by a cost vs performance ratio that is unacceptable?
