New to FTE and have a 1977.5 Ford F250 4X4 Ranger. I am looking at some trucks online and really like the look of this type of rear bumper. Is this just a certain style of bumper that I can purchase and install or will modifications need to be made?

This is not a bumper, it's an aftermarket roll pan. It takes the place of the bumper and fills the gap below the rear bed sill....giving it a cleaner finished look.
Also, and this is probably already known, but be aware that these eliminate what little protection the stock bumper provided. If someone rear ends you, they'll plow right into the frame rails and rear cross member, doing much more damage than if the bumper was there. This can open you up to legal issues in this event. They are technically illegal, as a rear bumper is required to be street legal.

Thru the 1980's, all rear bumpers were optional, so some trucks never had them.

i was gonna say something similar but i remember in the 90s the dealer gave me an explanation that the trucks didn’t come with a rear bumper. You had to order it or buy from the parts counter. Not illegal here in Oregon but, very unsafe for you and everyone else. The fuel tank is right there virtually unprotected, albeit a thin-gauge cross member just behind it.
Will depend on a state by state basis. Both of my trucks , 1968 and 1977 have dealer installed bumpers with the dealers name and location stamped in it. Pretty common thing back then.
OP, the roll pan does look good and gives the bed a finished look. Personally, I would put a bumper on anything I drove on the street. If nothing else, for the safety factor.
