Ahh. Well, no Cobra engine. Glad to know that now. When I had the heads off all eight cylinders looked great. The cross hatching was still visible. There was no ledge at the top of the cylinders. I'll check the compression anyway to include or exclude that possibility. I'll pick up a can of carb cleaner tomorrow and try that first. Thanks for the tips!
It just occurred to me that I have O2 sensor bungs in the pipes just after the headers. They're plugged now. It may pay to install sensors and a gauge to get this thing dialed in.
I would not drill the throttle blades. Not sure about those Avenger carbs, but most Holleys you can adjust the opening of the secondary blades. A slight change there will affect the draw on the primary side and change your adjustments for idle mixture.
I set the timing to 22° and took a test drive. Poor thing was knocking bad so I returned home and re-read this post. I noticed that Freightrain mentioned a secondary throttle plate adjustment so I watched a video on the subject. Luckily I had a very short flat screwdriver that fit the screw without having to remove the carb. I moved the secondary throttle plate screw 1/2 turn, started and noticed the engine was idling around 1300 rpm. I backed the primary throttle plate screw completely off the stop and had an idle of around 1100 rpm. I set the timing to 16° which brought the idle down to 800 rpm. I set the primary throttle plate screw to a 900 rpm idle.I adjusted the idle mixture screws 1 turn in for 15" of vacuum, 900 rpm idle in park and a steady 600 rpm in gear. It turned out that the secondary throttle plate adjustment was the key to getting this thing to behave.
Usually it is not something this is normally needed to mess with, but every engine is different and the quality of the carb out of the box can be iffy these days.
Glad it worked out for you.
