No that doesn't really help. There are two cables attached to the starter one of the cables is attached with the bolt that holds the starter on to the vehicle and the other cable is bolted on to the starter itself and I don't know which cable is positive and which is negative and how to go about connecting them to the battery I have red stuff about one of the cables connecting to the fender also and also to the engine block and then I don't know if they connect to the battery itself or to the starter solenoid from there

The cable that connects to the starter goes up to the solenoid on the passenger side fender on one of the large bolts. That is the only cable that goes on that bolt.

The cable that goes on with the mounting bolt is just a ground cable. I'm not quite sure of the best place to attach the other end of that cable. How long is that cable that goes on with the mounting bolt? Also what kind of end is on the other side of that cable?

The cable attached to the mounting bolt should be the ground. Anything else wouldn't make sense. Best connection for this is directly to the battery. The other cable goes to the starter relay. So the drawing does actually give you the information you need. Make sure you have everything grounded as it should be. I can take a picture of my 87 later if that helps.

The cable from the mounting bolt goes to the NEG post of the battery.
The cable from the electrical connection of the starter goes to the bolt on the starter relay/solenoid by its self (no other wires attach to this stud of the solenoid).

Ok thanks that does help also though I had to go buy new cables and I think the ones I bought might be too long and that could be part of my problem also so I'm going to head out to the junkyard and see if I can pull some off another truck so I know they are the right length
