Looking to put a 4bt Cummins into a 76 f250 single cab long bed factory high boy with the 400 modified and manual 4 speed, wondering what all to take into consideration and if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated,
I’ve never actually done the swap but I shopped it all out and studied it for several months. What it came down to is, by the time that I had the transmission the turbo I wanted and all the side necessities, bell housing and what not. I could drop a stroker motor in for less money. And the stroker motor would have the bottom and rebuilt. every four BT I was shopping was well used. The four BT could easily have too much blow by the even make satisfactory power with the turbo and the P pump all set up. To top it all off the 4bt isnt naturally balanced, I can’t explain it but it’s particularly why the sixbt will go for 300,000 and the 4BT rarely makes it past 150 without a rebuild... They’re a pain in the *** to start in the very frigid weather months as well. This isnt to talk you out of it, this is just to keep all things considered. If you’re really interested in it they do them all the time 4 BT has their own forum as well
From the bit of reading I have done, it appears that it will take about $6k to $10k (including engine) if you do it all yourself, and more like $20k if you pay a shop to do it.
Of course there are some guys who “have a buddy selling a step van 4bt for $1k”, work as an industrial welder so they fabricate all their own mounts etc, have a transmission laying around, and found it an easy swap (in their heated garage with a lift) and only have $1500 invested total. Unless that sounds like you, I would not expect a similar experience. Most build threads I’ve seen stretched well over two years. That said, the owners also generally say it was the best mod they ever did.
I personally think a diesel Highboy would be awesome! If you do this, please start a build thread on here with lots of pictures. I’m sure a lot of guys would be very interested. Good luck!
I did mine my self built it all! cuz I didn't like the options for engine mounts that are out there,I cut the mounts out of the dodge mine is a 6bt with nv 4500 including the 1996 dodge I have about 6 in it. my son and I are planning a 4bt swap for his hybrid 76/79 SC.I can tell you one thing 4bt will be way easier way more room. It is pretty straight forward. If you have the funds I have seen good builders with them for about 5500 and what I have seen these guys that are selling them used are nuts 3500 for an engine with 300,000K on them NO THANK YOU! or find one cheap and rebuild it they are not hard to do. Just do your home work and be prepared for some fab work AND DON'T BUY A KIT all I have seen are marginal at best that's why I did mine myself,And if you don't have the skill's you're never gonna get them any other way so just do it!
