I have a questions about pinging. I always thought you could identify pinging by hearing it( rattling noise). I am wondering now if all this time i have been looking for a miss, it might be detonation. Can detonation act like a miss? Would pinging show itself through the tach? My tach boucing around when this miss or pinging happens
If the detonation is bad enough to have burnt a valve or fouled a plug, then yes, you will get a miss or erratic operation. I chased this problem in Greystreak for several months until I finally realized that the knock sensor had failed so the computer wouldn't compensate for the knock and it kept fouling spark plugs. (So, Joe wised up and started troubleshooting by pulling codes first after that).
I remmeber reading your posts about that. I checked my plugs a little while ago and they weren't fouled. They were all a little white. I checked the codes after it had been missing for a while and the only code I ever got was a months ago, was a few months ago when the check engine light came on for about 3 minutes. the code i got if i read it right was low egr flow. I changed the egr vavle and sensor and it didn't help.
fuel fliter
coil
cap and rotor
wires
plugs
EGR valve and sesor
TPS sensor
cleaned the throttle body
cleaned the IAC
checked fuel pressure 31 idle 41 with vac off
Man, you're rough. Is this something that can be duplicated on a regular basis? I'm guessing that it doesn't happen at idle? What happened with the EGR? This is the area that a bad EGR will give you problems. When you changed the valve, did you clean out the port also?
I didn't go to far in and scrub anything I just scraped around it and wiped the inside a little. I havn't gotten anymore codes or lights since that one. It doesn't happen at idle, but it does happen pretty regularly. Usually it will start missing then keep cutting out, then it will stop if you give it gas of let off the gas and it will be ok for a while or start doing it again. I was in the mountains last month and i think i noticed it missing more while it was under load going up hills. the thing is that it can also go for a while without missing.
O.K. I'm going to sound dumb here but, does this use a vacuum advance or is it all done by computer? Sounds like bad EGR or maybe timing not advancing right. Maybe bad PCM but I really hate to condem those even though they do go bad.
definatly sounds like an ignition issue. especially with the problem under load. Check the base ignition timing, make sure to remove spout conector. If all is proper then the only thing you havnt replaced is the thick film module, or a pre-loaded reman distributor. just my 2 cents that will cost you a bit more then 2 cents. another 100 isnt much compared to your list of investments, and just think, the ignition system is all new and good to go for another million miles
i already got the module. I have been meaning to get out there and check the timing again. I will look into a new distributor too, after I see how the timing goes
