You guys who’ve trimmed your valance or installed the 2wd piece, what did you do with the two big stamped metal dodads that hang down off the frame rails? I can’t wait to chop that silly looking plastic chinstrap down on my front bumper, saw a poster on here who’d run his through a tablesaw and it looked great. But I climbed under the truck today and noticed those two big deals, whatever they are, that hang down almost level with the bottom of the plastic piece I want to shorten.
I’m thinking that if I leave them on it’s going to look silly with the two fangs hanging down. And I’m a little concerned that I’ll stuff one in the ground when off-road and either bend something or end up stuck.
Not for sure, but I've read that they are to keep you from running up & over Prius drivers.
Really.
In the event of an accident, they help stop you from launching supposedly.
Definitely for little cars. Same reason they added a bar across the bottom of the bumper frame to frame around 2002.
It looks like they’re not on the new tremor which makes me feel better about removing them. It also looks like the tremor has an even shorter balance than the 2wd
that said, I Find them barely noticeable. Could be a height thing at 6’2”. If my midget father in law says something I’ll probably take them off...
I also removed mine after cutting the valance. I used a compass to make a line that reflects the shape of the bottom of the bumper. It looks a thousand times better than a straight cut across the valance.
What did you cut your’s with Sherpa? Do you have a pic we could see?
I cut mine with a cordless oscillating tool while the valance was still attached. I don't have a pic at the moment, the valance pics don't show up well on screen. After cutting, I used a sharp blade and sandpaper to smooth the cut line out.
If you go out and look closely at your bumper you will see the contour of the bottom of the bumper, the valance reflects that contour. Hope this helps.

Any insight?
I put mine on a shelf in the garage. I installed the 2WD valance. So much easier than all that cutting and trimming to try saving a little money.

I got bored one day and trimmed my valance. Removed and tossed the Prius catchers. I had the valance removed entirely for a while but didn't like the raw look of the pinched metal under the bumper, especially with bolts sticking out. I measured in several areas around the bumper and made lots of marks because I'd be cutting by hand, very slowly. It looks great from 15 feet but if you get up under you can tell it's obviously not perfect. This is more than okay by me because it cost $0 and fills in the raw metal look perfectly.
