I have a 1988 f-350 with a 460. I am having a slight problem my rabs light comes on about 10 seconds after I start the truck and stays on when that happens I lose all brake lights and cruise control. I have checked the brake switch when engaged it is sending the power out. I have replaced the brakes and filled the brake fluid replaced the sensor on the differential and at the transmission. I have checked the brake bulbs and even went so far as to thinking about rerouting the brakes lights. I have taken it to ford and they have no idea.I would appreciate any help maybe someone has an idea that I haven't thought of.
Thanks, John
I assume you meant that you checked this sensor, it wasn't clear, but just in case you didn't...
The spedometer pickup supplies information to the Rear ABS system, and of course the speedo. If it goes out the abs light will come on but the brakes will still work(without abs I assume), the speedo may fluctuate and the cruise may not work.
Very easy to replace and not too expensive a part. It is a walnut sized thingy that sits kind of on the top front of the differential. I think it is the only item that has wires on it anywhere near the differential and maybe even the whole rear axle. At least this is ture for a 94 F250.
I encountered a similar problem on an econoline van about the same year. I fixed it for the ford dealer that was next to my shop. Anyway, on the van it was only the right side that didn't work but because the brake light didn't work, the cruise control wouldn't work either. I traced the wiring to a connector on the inner fender well under the brake master cylinder. It was a round connector. It got corrosion inside of it which prevented the brake light from getting it's 12volts to light up. Since the corrosion was so bad, I jumpered a wire across the connector to complete the circuit. The round connector contained the wires for the brake lights, taillights and backup lights. Hope this helps.
