Hey guys, the time has come to (try) and quiet down the 7.3. I've been running a 4 inch straight pipe to a 5 inch tip for about 3 years now and like how it sounds, but I've been doing a lot of longer road trips and more driving in general. With all of this driving, the drone is starting to get really old. After doing some searching, I think an fte resonator will do what I want. I don't want to totally get rid of all the noise and turbo whistle. I mainly want to get rid of the drone. Now my question is would I be better off with the 17 inch or 30 inch resonator? My truck is an extended cab short bed so a fairly short wheel base. Thanks.
Well after waiting on Fedex for a couple of days, my resonator finally showed up. I just went to my local exhaust shop and got them to weld it up.
Initial impressions...the drone is GONE. All I hear now is turbo, engine, and tire noise. It definitely took some of the exhaust note away, but it still sounds good when I'm romping on it. EGT's seem to be about the same, but I haven't towed with it yet.
Next on the list is the hutch mod to try and quiet the injectors down a little.
Like you I did something similar, but instead of drone complaint it was more of exaust smell, installed a 6.doh kitty where the muffler would have been and it worked great no more foul dieael smell and as a bonus the drone is gone as well as a reduction in exhaust noise.
Yeah this resonator also cut down a lot of the exhaust smell compared to the straight pipe. It still has a little smell, but not nearly as bad. After watching the video, I was surprised it still has as good of an exhaust note as it does. It sounds just a hair louder than factory in the cab. I have also noticed just a hair better spool up time (I think) compared to the straight pipe. However, it could just be because the truck is quieter and doesn't sound like it's working as hard.
