VBulletin, the most widely used PHP/Mysql message board software, has an import script for DCForum. Using this script I can import all users, posts, polls, etc. No functionality will be lost, I'll put in all the hacks and enhancements I've added to DCForum into the VBulletin software.
VBulletin has a bunch of features not found here plus an interface familiar to more users (it's even more like the UBB interface than what we use here). Additionally, searches will be lightning fast.
No postings, post counts, etc., will be lost.... Your votes and replies explaining your vote are encouraged.

Speaking only as a former unix admin, if you are not yet using Microsoft products to run this site, keep it that way. The new licensing agreements allow you to use THEIR software for a given time and then get to pay them an annual fee... You do not purchase a perpetual license as in the past, so you are hooked into their revenue stream until the cows come home. Not trying to bash them, just reporting what I hear from the industry. I personnaly will not use their latest products as I refuse to 'register' my computer with them. They have no right to know what components make up my machine. Pretty soon they will license home software based on the speed and/or number of the CPU(s) that you are using, much as IBM does for big iron. Not me. I'll stick with my old clunkers.
BY the way, how can I get rid of the smilie things. I can hardly type when they are swinging around, bouncing, and generally jiggling. They use so much CPU that I can way overtype the machine. Additionally, when I go to reply to a post, many times the display is blank and the browser says 'document done', but if I wait a long time, I *may* get a response form like the one I am typing in now...

The one thing that I'd like to see made easier is the ability to post pictures within posts. I'm sure it's not entirely difficult, but I have no idea how, and I'm sure that it could be done easier with that new software. The overall appearance and organization of this board is superb, but sometimes it does funny things (return to topics when you hit "reply"). I'd also like to see people posting new questions on old threads, instead of everybody that has something new to say creating a new thread. Some threads are worse than others, I hardly ever read the 73-79 trucks forum anymore, simply because I can't keep up with any of the dozens of new threads that pop up everyday. On the other side, the oil forum almost never gets new threads, we keep the existing ones going for 100's of posts. Otherwise a flawless website, my favorite without a question!
Thanks for what you do Ken!

tomw,
I didn't say "MSQL", I said "MySQL". Big difference. Everything we run is open source on a Linux box. We're slowly transitioning the office over to Linux now that Open Office is getting mature.

I have no clue to what the differences would be, but if switching over will enhance this site then I say go for it. I turst Ken will make the right decision for FTE, just look at how good it is now.

What does it look like? Is there a forum out there that currently uses it that I can visit?
I really like this software. It could be that I am familiar with it...
Will all the smilie, avatar, pics in posts, ratings and stuff still be the same?

One cool feature is you can have sub-forums within sub-forums, within sub-forum. DCForum can do that but only to 1 level and it doesn't do it well (which is why its turned off here).

Ken,
Does this mean if everyone is for the change,I wouldn't have to put the newsletter together?
It would seem the best thing to do would be to go with the upgrade then,Not that I'm afraid of the task,it's just that I would think the regular bulletin boards would be kept up to date weekly,Correct ?.
I vote upgrade.

Since I don't know the technical attributes of either, I would have to go with the common sense rules:
* Which is easier for you to run and maintain?
* Which runs faster for its users? (I use DSL, so it really doesn't matter to me)
* Which has more potential to build off of?
* Do YOU want to change?
I am a member of 2 other boards that run VBulletin, and have no problems with it. I also like this setup... Guess it just depends on how ou want your site to look...
IMO of course...
