My wife and I are on the road with my '95 F150 w/ 4.9, 5spd and 2.73 gears.
We left South Jersey on Tuesday, and are now in Chicago visiting a relative. Next week we go to the Smoky Mountains, finishing up with about 6 days in Ocracoke, N.C., before heading home.
We have a perfectly capable Honda, but I had the urge to take the truck. I filled up once; getting 18.4 mpg at 70-75 mph with the AC on, going up and down the hills of PA. It could use probably a 3.27 or so gear on those hills.
It's been running great. Only trouble is the junkyard speed control I just added kicks itself off once in a while. The resume button brings it back. I wonder if the brake or clutch switches can do that? The brake lights don't flicker on bumps. Not a big deal. It still beats not having cruise at all.
Plenty of room for stuff! Funny how when family heard we were going to Chicago to visit, we got several requests to take stuff with us (for our relative, who moved w/o taking everything) lol.
I don't know if this recall has anything to do with your problem but it is a real problem and several members on here have had theirs burn while just parked. Ford WILL STILL fix these under the recall for free. Sandy

I got it from a 94-96 Eddie Bauer Bronco. Don't know what year exactly, but it had an airbag wheel, which I understand makes it a 94-96.
The recall notice mentions an electrical/hydraulic fluid switch. I guess this would have to be the one on the master cylinder. I didn't grab those parts. I figured new would be best there. I put a new master cyl and switch on before we left, but the mc leaked and I took it off. It works w/o them. I believe they are a redundancy.
I imagine Ford won't replace it on a truck that wasn't built with it, but again, I thank you.
As far as a tag on it; the truck is parked in the garage of the hi-rise where we're staying. When I get the chance, I'll look. I guess a tag indicates that the recall was done on the truck?
I'm wondering if the servo unit is serviceable; i.e. is there anything repairable about it, or if it's the problem, should I just try another JY unit?
It's been several years since I did mine. I ordered the part on Amazon and did mine myself. I guess you could research it a little more or maybe someone will chime in that has more knowledge. Anyway I wanted you to be aware of it because of the potential problem. Sandy
We got home last Thursday, so I thought I'd update this thread.
We did 634 miles from Chicago to the Smokies. It was a 12 hour trek. The old truck ran fine.
Drove up and down the mountains for a few days (as high as 6600'). Could definitely use more power or rear gear, but it ran fine.
The speed control problem seems to have fixed itself. (I like those fixes.) Maybe because the parts were in the weather in the junkyard, they needed a few "cycles"? I don't know, as long as it works, I'm happy.
Driving across North Carolina, to Ocracoke (great place), and from there to home in South Jersey finished it up. 2639 miles, all in all. Averaged 19.03 mpg. With the AC on, driving mostly at 70-75 mph. Also some 60 mph and a little bit of 80-85. (Shhhhhh!)
The only issue, as it is, was that because it's a standard cab, it was hard to take a nap. -Can't tilt the seat back.
Oh, one other thing, it developed a rattle at slow speeds that sounded like sheet metal. When we got home, I too the tonneau cover off, as I don't normally use it, and the rattle was gone.
Congratulations on what sounds like a great trip. 2600 miles and 19 mpg is excellent mileage. That's what my dad got with his 300 sixes and it's what I got with mine when I owned an 81 F250 manual tranny. Good to hear your cruise issue resolved itself too.
Thanks Dave. We did enjoy ourselves. Lottsa stories.
I didn't expect much in the way of mpg. It's a workhorse motor. If it didn't have the overdrive, I don't think it would've been as appealing (to take it). But of course, we all drove all over the country without overdrive in in the "old days".
Now, do I have the nerve to take my 11 second '87 Mustang on a road trip...???
It does pretty good, actually. 20 with the chip plugged into the computer, 22 if I take it out. It got 25-26 when it was stock. The "Noise, Vibration and Harshness" level, or NVH as Ford called it when designing cars, is probably past my wife's tolerance level. lol
