Engine swap 4.0l to B2

Hello again, 1997 ranger 4.0l into 1987 Bronco ll. I have submitted a couple of threads on this subject, also read other threads on it. I'm almost just as confused now as when I started as I am now. I just read a article in engine swaps about 1994 4.0l being used. Can I follow some of this thread or is my 97 completely different?

also what is involved in swapping the OBDll system and whats involved in that process. Any help please.

AHS '71 FWIW. Is the 4.0 a SOHC motor? If so, not recommended. (those engines have cam chain issues and may not even fit)

Swapping the OBDII would be the entire harness and almost everything attached to it.

Do you have smog inspection? If you are smog-free, you can carb a pushrod 4.0.

The ever popular 302 swap might be easier with respect to parts and info as it is, after all, ever popular.

Hello 85e150 The engine isn't the 4.0l SOHC it's just the 4.0l EFI. I have the complete engine harness and ECM. I have the power distribution box installed under the hood. The ECM I cut a hole in the firewall and mounted it where it was on the ranger. The battery box I moved to the let side where the 4.0 starter is closer. Can I use earlier wiring diagrams in my wiring swap. All of the swaps I found are with earlier 4.0l engines. It's a learning process I read articles all the time. There must be someone out there that knows how to swap the wiring. Explained in layman terms. Thx David

I read thru some of the stuff on Bronco Corral and can tell you one thing that is absolutely false. You DO NOT need to swap the dash if your BII is '88 or older. I suspect this rumor is due to the huge plug next to the brake booster, which has some engine wiring but a ton of stuff that has nothing to do with the engine. There are only 10 -12 engine/alternator wires that need to be spliced. I can't speak for auto tranny wires though as I don't believe in auto trannies for a fun or work vehicle. My 93 donor did have an auto but the 4L and its computer work fine with my TK5. I would get the manuals, Chiltons or Haynes, even check your library for diagrams and use them as a guide. I wish my swap thread from BII.org was out there but I don't think it is. Lotta good info in that thread. My swap was from January - April, 2012. Good luck!!

  • Hey guys thx for all the helpful replys. I have read article after article and all are for earlier years ; 91, 94, but no 97. so again I ask can I use earlier model wiring diagrams. My enfine is the 4.0l EFI. The 4.0l wiring harness has 4 sq. plugs, 3 were attached to the fire wall going into the cab. The other one attaches to the engine to which I plugged in. The EMC I have plugged in also. I using the power distribution box also. These 3 plugs have no use in my scenario so I'm going cut them off and tape the cut ends. i just guessing but I'm thinking 95% of those wires won't be used. I'm using the B2 head light harness and under dash wires including in cab fuse block. I unplugged the B2 computer and just left the plug no knowing what to do with it. Would it help if I layed out the 40.l wiring harness and took pictures. Never uploaded pictures here I'll figure it out. Thx

Yeah - post some harness pics and what goes where if you can. You don't need to leave the 2.9L computer plug hanging. The factory 2.9L harness will come out with the engine and computer. The 4L swaps over with its own harness and computer. I'm not sure about the '97, but its computer will probably mount in the same place behind the passenger kick panel as the 2.9 computer. I wouldn't cut any wiring on a "guess." If you're absolutely sure and a diagram confirms it, you're probably safe to do so. Don't make it any more complicated than it needs to be. All your factory headlight wiring and other stuff not having to do with the engine should stay where it is. Only the engine harness will need to be spliced, along with alternator and other supporting wires (clutch in to start, etc). I don't know jack about the auto tranny wiring so I can't even guess on that.

One thing I did to make life easier as far as gauges go - I got a gauge kit from Summit for voltage, engine temp and oil press - works way better than idiot lights and the in dash temp gauge.

Pictures of 97 ranger harness.

Complete under hood harness 97 ranger 4.0l.

My project. 87 B2.

This is the complete under hood 97 ranger harness. Note the 3 plugs those go through the firewall. The single one at the top plugs into the engine.

Man, I don't know. You're gonna have to get the books and find out what the engine needs and what it doesn't. I'm betting anything connected thru the dash has to do with gauges, not making the engine run. I don't see the computer in those pics.

This is the engine bay. The computer is in the fire wall that brown color object.

This is the new battery location so the starter will work. Moved relay to this side. Those wires are the old B2 wires coming out of the cab.

This is passenger side where the new power distributor box will mount. That relay is just a junction box. Getting power from the other side.

This is the new starter relay location and the old B2 wires.

This is the female part of the harness that that single black plug connects too. Note all of the engine sensors, alternator are wired up from this plug.
You are right about the computer it's on another picture. I was trying to upload 3 more pictures but it would not let me. I will try again. You are correct about the dash, it and the head light B2 harness are stand alone. The picture 1 showing the part of the harness with the 2 relay is headlight and turn signals ect. I will remove soon. From what I have read most of this won't be use. It's just figuring which part. I temped a battery and lights come on and door locks actuated to lock. Other guys who have done this claim there is only about 10 to 12 wires you need. I will keep after it , and I will get it sooner or later. Thx.
