Transmission cooling pans? Advise, experience....

Another question, I am considering the installation of a transmission oil cooler or someone suggested looking at the transmission oil pan coolers. What say ye?

Thanks again.

There is no such thing as a transmission pan cooler. There are pans that are sold as coolers, but they do NOT work. The ONLY way to cool the trans is with a cooler. A pan is just for holding fluid.

Grant, if you're looking to add an aftermarket pan to your transmission you might inquire if there is an OE deep pan for your transmission. I had the TH400 rebuilt on my 71 Oldsmobile and the gent that did the rebuild included an OE deep pan as part of the price of the rebuild. I was considering the aftermarket "cooling pans" like you. He said the same as Mark, they're just gimmicks.

they make nice Rock Collectors.....

IF your Fluid is 170F or less you don't need additional cooling.

Personally I have considered adding a 5 Gallon Aux Fluid tank, IF I ever get around to doing that I will Post the results.
most likely the only gain would be is longer Fluid Life.

I'd change that to, "If your fluid is 220°F or less you don't need additional cooling."

Ok, guys so the cooling pan is out. Do you then think it is worth an extra fluid cooler? I already have the upgraded aluminum radiator with the cooling tank built in. Do I need the extra cooling?

I put in a deep sump pan on my C6. Having extra fluid is nice peace of mind, but I didn't see any temp reduction until I put on an E350 aux tranny fluid cooler in front of my condenser. Also, the deep sump obstructed the Banks up-pipes, so I had to stay with my Hypermax kit that goes over the top of the tranny.

Grant, are you going to be towing with your truck? If so, do everything you can to keep those transmission temps down. You also will put more strain on your transmission if you run over-sized tires.
