Hood Hinge Mounting Repair 1954 F100
This post to shows how repairs were made to the threaded mounts on the hood where the hinges are attached.
Some time ago the previous owner had replaced the threaded mounts by welding nuts to flat stock and then welding the flat stock to the outside of the hinge mounting bracket. Not sure how long this repair worked but when I bought the truck 3 of the nuts were stripped and the 4th was missing.
My rebuild involved fitting a piece of 3/8” thick flat stock behind the hinge bracket at each bolt hole location. The flat stock was drilled and tapped for the hinge bolt before welding. The hinge mounting bracket was drilled in several spots in front of each piece so they could be secured by plug welding.
It was a challenge to determine the proper location of the mounting holes as 3 of the 4 holes had been enlarged and their locations on each side of the hood were slightly different. Also found that the hinge mounting brackets were factory mounted to the hood in slightly different positions on each side. I decided to complete one side as best I could and then spent a lot of time carefully matching the locations on the other side relevant to the hood, not the bracket. At least the mounts are now consistent side to side. I’m hoping I can get all adjustment needed from the oversize hinge mount holes on the firewall side.

Very nice job. I did similar on my 56, only I used those rectangle/square body nuts that I found elsewhere on the truck. They have a square step and then are a rectangle, kinda hard to explain. Anyway I made the existing round holes in the sheet metal square and then the rectangle was inside the hood ,inside the sheet metal, then welded in. Then ground off the weld smooth. You may find when you put your hinges on that you may have to fill the larger hole as I think the shoulder bolt will pinch the hinge before it bottoms as it is supposed to bottom on the metal so the step becomes the pivot for the hinge.
