Last week I was cruising along the highway, when the engine sputtered for two seconds and then shut off. Wouldn't start again. Towed it home, pulled code P0174. Since it stopped without warning or running bad, I figured fuel pump/filter is a good possibility. Unfortunately, that wasn't it. Vacuum leak or MAF sensor might be other possibilities, but it should run, albeit bad, correct? Any ideas? Van is 96 E150 4.9L 248k
I'm not very familiar with that engine, but you probably have a Crank Position Sensor somewhere. That would be a prime suspect. Probably also a Cam Position Sensor. They don't usually throw a code, but either one will kill your engine dead, dead, dead. You won't get any spark if either of those two is kaput.
So, that begs the question: Do you have spark? Fuel?
DTC P0174 is somewhat of a generic code, means Bank 2 is too lean---typically that condition wouldn't cause a complete shut down as you describe.
I'm with Wireless here--has to be something fuel or ignition related. Also not familiar with that year but is it OBD-I or OBD-2 ? Is DTC P0174 the only code you could retrieve?
Thanks for taking the time to respond. After replacing fuel pump and filter, fuel pressure was up to normal. No spark, however. Switched the coil (which was the newest part on the van, only 5 months old), and it fired right back up. Now, while I'm at it, might as well do the 1/4 million mile tune-up.
Btw, it was OBD II. Code P0174 popped up after it left me stranded. There was an older P0118 code (ECT sensor) for a while.
