PVD Wheel. What To Do Now?

Walked up to the truck to find this...

I saw a blemish in the finish last wash, and didn’t get around to going to the dealer. Now it looks like a chip from a rock. Don’t think I’ll be successful getting it replaced. Especially after 32k. This truck just hates me.

Still, give it a go, it looks like the surface prep failed. Nothing ventured nothing gained!

I'd give it a rip, but boy have you had your trials with that truck. Sure am happy I went with the non-PVD wheels.

Mine is the same color, but a 6-1/2 footer. Maybe you’re on it with those wheels. Looks good. I like chrome, but at $625 for one wheel, I’ll get an aftermarket set. I don’t like the 18” chrome wheels, but since I like OWL BFG KO2’s, and 20’s don’t come that way, maybe I’ll look at 18’s... non-PVD, of course. If the oil stops disappearing.

My $h**box...

Yep. A love-hate relationship. It loves to hate me.

Many owners of the PVD wheels have complaints similar to yours so you’re not alone.
It just isn’t a more reliable finish than true chrome plating such as the plating on the chrome bumpers.

Yep, I'd give it a shot also. My '15 had the 18" PVD wheels up until about 70K miles and never had a problem with the finish. I changed them out for a set of
20" Platinum non-PVD wheels because I wanted to get away from the LT All terrain tires I had put on. Truck is a highway queen.

You could get them blasted and then have them powder coated with a chrome like finish or any number of other finishes. I don't know how clean the PVD would blast though. Anything other walnut shells, or something similar, would alter the design details on the wheel.

Called the dealer. Three year warranty. Now, it only depends on the review. Chip or bonding issue.

The best "chrome" wheels I had were on my 2001 F150. They were actually steel with a stainless face bonded on them. They looked great for a long time, just waxed them once a year.

My wife had the newer simulated chrome on her 2011 Edge. They were plasti-chrome bonded to an aluminum wheel. They looked bad after only a year.

True, triple chrome plating is rare anymore and is usually done overseas where quality control is not great. Very few places in the US do it anymore. There used to be a chrome plating business in San Antonio. It closed years ago due to EPA regs. Back in the 70s and 80s, my dad would flip used cars. He would take beat up bumpers off of the cars or trucks and take them there to be straightened and re-chromed.

My daughter has these same wheels on her 2018 but in Aluminum and they look great. She tested another truck with the PVD wheels and I steered her clear of that one in a hurry based on the horror stories here on FTE alone.

Anyway, I'll nickname your truck "christine" for now. Let's hope like hell that she doesn't try to kill you or someone else!!

At some point you gotta accept its a truck and as long as the issues are cosmetic only, drive it and enjoy it. Unless you really enjoy spending time at the dealers waiting room

Really? That’s absolutely ridiculous. Until the warranty runs out, no freaking way. $60k and I’m supposed to accept it looking like crap? If it’s not my fault, I’m not accepting PVD failing at 12 months of ownership when it’s warranted three years. I can only imagine what your possessions look like with the “Eh, it’s just a truck” attitude.
