Tried the stubby on my F150 didnt care for the look, and couldnt deal with signal lose. Took the stock antenna removed the ball from the end, measured it to stop even with the top of cab, cut it off with a dremel tool, tapperd the end, fit the ball back, hit it with black rustoleum. No difference in signal, doesnt hit my door header anymore, and other than 1/2hr of time, free. Did the same for my superduty.
Does the ball screw back on and you had to do a threaded taper, or did you just glue it back on the end? This approach seems simplest and most effective to me...
How much height difference is there for that 21” above/below the cab?
I’ve heard some folks cut their stock antenna and reattach the ball, but I haven’t looked at it yet - assuming there’s threading that would have to be cut into the top after cutting it? My thought is to try and cut the stock one so that it’s about an inch taller than the cab, that way I have an advance notice that a parking garage is too low before I hit the cab but it otherwise wouldn’t bang around with how tall it is stock. Those indicator bars the garages put at entrances aren’t exactly the most accurate sometimes.
No threading. Pull the ball off with pliers ( it didn't seem to hurt it), cut antenna to desired height, then glue/epoxy/JB Weld, etc. the ball back on.
I did this after a rubber stubby didn't come home from the car wash one day. Never liked the look of it anyhow.
I just installed this one. There was a station that at my house I could pick up but with minor static with the stock antenna. With the new shorter one, it now surprisingly comes in crystal clear. Really shocked me, as I thought I would have lost that station around my house with the new shorter antenna.
Ball has to be pulled off, it takes some doing but, I've done it twice now and it can be done. You need to taper the end after cutting to fit the ball back on. I used a dab of exterior super glue. Then hit with the paint just to clean it up!
