Question oil pressure gauge drop out 4.6

4.6 awd 01 Expedition

Service eng light came on then i started noticing the oil pressure gauge droppes out for seconds at a time to the dead bottom.

I took the truck to pepboys for diags and they replaced the erg sensor and gave the truck back to me. When I got it back The oil pressure gauge dropped out.

Now I know they tell me the erg sensor was why the check eng light was on and not why the oil pressure drops. I am not a macanic and they didnt explain anything to me before charging me $227 bucks. Any help on this oil pressure problem will be helpfull. Also I just found a What looks like a sensor plug hanging near my oil filter. But there is a plug plugged in in the area I cant see where this one goes. ??? Did pepboys unpug it to hide a problem they didnt try or couldnt solv??

I would have a real pressure gauge hooked up to check actual pressure. It may be something as simple as a bad sending unit.

Had a 95 Crown Vic with 4.6, experienced same thing and thought oil pressure sending unit, only had 70,000 miles on it. Did it off an on for about two months and then it threw 3 rods. Replaced engine, lasted 9 months and threw 2 rods. Car sat for a year while I paid it off, then parted it out.

oil pressure

Replace the oil pressure sending unit. It's a fast easy fix too. That was a problem for me going up hill under power, light went on , road levels off light went out. Trying different brands of oil filters had little effect on the problem.

The oil pressure sender is a simple on/off switch - if the sender is bad, you'll get exactly the symptom you're describing. I'd start with replacing the sending unit.
