I have a 94 Ranger XLT two wheel drive 4.0 motor V6 5 speed transmission. I was having problems with the starters and had to keep replacing them about every 3 months because they would start grinding so I finally replaced the clutch pressure plate flywheel and slave cylinder bought a brand new starter and this starter is now grinding and not starting the truck and it has only been a week since I put the new parts in can anybody please explain to me what I am doing wrong or is there something I should be doing that I'm not doing. To my knowledge Ford's don't have shims
A couple of things come to mind. Since the flywheel has been replaced, we know the teeth are likely ok, so check for under load voltage drop to the starter motor, this would include the B+ & B- cables. Both need to be clean bright & tight on Both ends. Also check the battery for under load voltage drop, if its output is wimpy when attempting to crank the engine, the starter Bendix pull in will also be weak. If your battery in under charged, use your smart charger to slowly bring it back up to a good fully saturated charge & see how it goes. Some thoughts for consideration. Let us know how it goes.
Starting voltage is good drops very little when I tried to start it only grinds when I'm trying to start it not while I'm driving it the plate between the engine and transmission I assume also works as a shim for the starter. Now on the inside of that ring that the starter fits in on my truck the inside part of the Ring seems like it is sucking in I don't know how it doing it but the Inside Edge of that rain where the starter goes seems to be sucking in halfway around it and I can't tell if it's not going in Far Enough or if it's going in too far and I'm wondering if I might be able to use the starter from an automatic since the cone is a little longer I don't know I'm willing to try anything I'm lost on this truck
