Give me some help if you can - what is this object?
I found it laying on a brace on top of the steering column near the firewall, under the dash. I was attempting to straighten out the NIGHTMARE of wiring a previous owner did. The splices connected to it broke way as I was moving wire, so I have no idea where they went. The wires were connected by small pigtails.
It is about 3" X 2" - the wires are red, blue & black. There is not part number that I can find on it.
It doesn't look like anything I've ever found in an old Ford, so I'm going to guess that it's for an aftermarket stereo or alarm or something. Might even be to one of those breathalyzer-interlock rigs or an old cellular phone or something...
How about a trailer brake? Whatever it is is at least kind of old since the case is metal.
^^^ x3. Whatever it is, it's not a stock part. I'd open it and try to figure out what it did out of curiosity. Don't spend to much time with it and just leave it off.
Mark.
I'm thinking its one of those boxes they used to put on a stereo system to clear up static due to ignition interference. Radio Shack, JC Whitney, Crutchfield type of a thing.
That is one of those experimental tracking devices the US Government was installing in the 70`s to track fuel consumption during the fuel crisis. Naw just kiddin but sounded probable.... My guess would be a relay for some aftermarket accessories

I was thinking that, but then saw only three wires.
Thinking about it again, I guess a relay can have just three wires if the case is metal and can be a ground for the primary circuit. Case in point: Horn relays, they only have three terminals.
Does not look like radio suppressor, they usually did not have three wires. They normally either looked like an electrical coil (two wires) to be hooked onto the power wire, one wire when it was wired to the coil and grounded, or possibly a filter to go on the antenna wire. If it does not seem to affect anything, just leave it off. Don't recall seeing 5V in a truck for a stereo, usually you have switched 12V+ and constant 12V+, no 5V.
Thanks. I took off the cover and inside was some sort of coil and and a few capacitors?/diodes?. I've checked everything else - heater blower, lights, etc., and all seem to be functioning.
