Pan gasket/rear main or both?

Truck is a 1984 F250 4X4 w/460. Picked it up Monday, and on the drive home I stopped at a gas station to top it off. Notice a steady oil drip underneath it, checked oil and it was down half a quart although it was full 100 miles earlier. Once home, I pulled the inspection cover and here is what I could see. Notice the travel route of oil between the rear of the pan and bell housing plate. Either way I know it is a job to fix and will more than likely do both of them, but I just want someone else's opinion.

Best guess would be rear main and when you do that it is good to know you must set the crush on the seal when installing it. I did not know this the first couple times I did one but it is quite important I think it is 010 to 015 and while the pan is off get one of the rubber reusable pan gaskets they make now, little spendy but not too bad and they save a whole lot of headaches in my opinion.. They are a one piece gasket so very little sealant is needed if any..

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking of going with the one piece main and oil pan gasket seeing as I will be pulling the motor anyhow.

Well I pulled the engine last week and got it ready for the rear main and pan gasket. I am going to go with a two piece main seal, seeing as I don't want to have to pull the timing cover and such to remove the crank. Is there any preference on what brand/material?

I just used what came with the engine kit, fel pro but check for sure on the seal crush and how much it needs although I was pretty close I believe. I was almost going to a rope seal when I heard about the seal needing that checked and have had no problems since..

You can't use a 1 piece seal in a 2 pc rear seal block. Or vice-versa

I was referring to the Kaase one piece seal.

After spending a couple hours every few days it is finally done. New factory rear main seal "2 piece", one piece pan gasket, new valve cover gaskets, and new motor mounts. All seems good after an hour or so running it around, fingers crossed.

Good for you! Hope it stays that way and it should, if it is going to leak it usually only takes a few minutes at most before you know it..
