Yup, a torsion bar. There's one inside the tailgate for the same reason. The back seat is pretty heavy to tip forward without it and the tailgate is a couple hundred pounds. The back seat will also rattle and bounce around if it's not in place.
It takes a couple tries to get it right, but there's two hooks near the springs for the rear seat that it slides into. I believe the longer arm of the spring goes against the seat while the shorter one presses against the perch on the floor.

The tailgate isn't a couple hundred pounds... at least doesn't feel like it, but it's heavy for sure, around 100lbs. That torsion bar inside the tailgate... it eventually snaps or rust does its thing, like mine did, and when it does it takes the tailgate window with it as the bar is under tension when the tailgate is open and that's when it's more likely to fail.
I think just the tailgate shell is about 80lbs. Then add in the regulator, motor, and glass, and it's at least 150+.
Dunno exactly.
But either way, not something you want to be lifting up and down without assistance.
I will confirm that it sucks. I've been running without the tailgate torsion bar for a few years. The bracket that held it in place inside the tailgate rusted off and the torsion bar broke my rear window. When I installed the new rear window I removed the torsion bar.
That's good to know guys. I did get the bar re installed without any trouble. Funny thing is though, it doesn't seem to make a difference in how easily the seat swings up or down.
I think the seat is light enough where you won't notice a big difference. It's awkward due to its size, but I can take the seat out and carry it with one arm.
What it does help a lot with is keeping tension on it, so it doesn't bang and rattle as you're driving on bumpy roads.

Well shoot I did notice it's a lot quieter back there now. Thanks AB!
