1/2 crane for pick-up bed on '97 F150
harbor freight
I was going to pickup one of these 1/2 ton capacity cranes to use for lifting and hauling all the spare tranny's and transfer cases I have laying around from the gen 6 F150's I've canebelized over the years. I'm wondering if I need any type of re-enforcement underneath of it, like a steel plate to run the bolts threw on the bottom side. Also, do most people that do that have to take the tail-gate off? (hope this is the right forum section).

Yes, you absolutely need reinforcement to support the crane. There should be a structure to tie the base of the crane to the frame of the truck. Just adding a steel plate to the underside of the bed is insufficient. I will post pictures of the support I fabricated for my crane shortly.
