Backfires on cold engines
Without warming up my rig as much as I usually do, I drove my truck today and encountered a carb. backfire. But it ran fine after it was all warmed up.
What is it about a cold engine (300 I-6, Holley 600, et al) that would cause a backfire? Could it hurt anything?

A lean condition. Probably the choke is opening too fast or the carb is jetted just a bit lean. If it is a bit lean it will show up more on a cold engine than a warm one. The timing could be a little slow as well.
