Which starter to buy? 79 F150 2wd 351M
Looks like I am in for a new starter. These are the options I have found. Anyone have experience (good or bad) with any of these?

Gear reduction
I have a 351m c6 auto 4x4 and was able to use a gear reduction starter from a 93 f350 460 no problem. Bolts right on and takes load away from fender mounted solenoid and uses a starter mounted see pic below
The wiring changes slightly. Both large battery cables go on the same stud on the fender solenoid to put power at the starter all the time. Then run a 10 gauge wire from the other side of the fender solenoid to the small post on the starter and it will operate with the key switch of the truck without you having to rewire anything major.
Hope this helps

Well, I went the easy route. My local favourite parts supplier had the AC-Delco reman unit in stock for $65 (CDN!) + $13 core. Lifetime warranty. Picked up and installed same day (last Thursday) and runs like a charm.
If anyone is changing the starter on one of these engines (in this case a 351M) the top bolt faces forward and the bottom bolt faces the rear of the truck. I was thoroughly confused until I searched this forum to find out why I could not find the top bolt.
