Exterior mouldings

Ive noticed 73-79 trucks with two different exterior moulding styles. 1 with a rubber bumper and encloses front marker light and 2 narrow style without bumper that stops before the marker light. Is this relevant to a certain trim package or just a random install? If anyone could shed some light please help thanks.

The green truck trim is what we (well alot of us anyway) on here commonly refer to as "thin trim", makes sense. Actually called "Cab or Box moldings W/O vinyl insert" It is not seen very often and NOT reproduced by any vendor that I know of. The other trim with vinyl insert is way more common and reproduced by many vendors. As far a what decides what trim package goes on what truck, Custom, Ranger, Ranger XLT. Sorry I can't answer that one as far as the thin trim. I do believe that the XLT gets the trim with the black vinyl insert. Here is a link to some more info.

The XLT gets the trim with the black vinyl insert.
1973/79 Custom: No body side mouldings.

1973/79 Ranger: Thin upper bodyside mouldings.

1973/76 Ranger XLT: Wide upper bodyside mouldings with black vinyl inserts.

Upper fender, door and cab corner mouldings with black vinyl inserts also used with Race Track mouldings:

1977/79 Ranger XLT & 1978/79 Lariat.

Actually, the bright bodyside molding with black rubber insert was part of the Ranger trim level on Styleside pickups from 1975 on.

Do you have a sales brochure that lists/shows this info?
I've seen more of these trucks brand new than most members of this forum. So, AFAIK:

Black vinyl insert upper bodyside mouldings only available on Ranger XLT's. Rangers came with the narrow upper bodyside mouldings without the inserts.

But Ford sometimes had "Springtime" promotions for dealers to boost sales...where they offered parts on Customs and Rangers that were not available otherwise.

For example wheel opening mouldings were installed on Customs. Usually Customs had no bodyside mouldings of any kind.

I stand corrected, looks like by 1978, bright bodyside moldings with vinyl insert were back up in the Ranger XLT trim level. Ranger came with the narrow molding, so ND, you do remember correctly for 1978 and 9.

I enjoy the look of the thin mouldings anyway, if i could only get my hands on a descent set. Thanks for shedding some light on this.

My '76 SWB had the thin moldings when I bought it a few years ago. Missing 1 front fender piece I searched a zillion parts trucks it seemed and online for a long time with no luck. Tough trim to find without spending a huge amount of cash !! I finally bid and bought a perfect, complete set on Ebay for $60 something dollars; SHIPPED !!!! They guy sent it from Georgia in a 4" PVC pipe with my address written in red magic marker on the side! The postmaster in town was quite curious AND amused at that package!

I have some of this trim, if you want to start collecting enough to make a set.

It is out there, but can be hard to locate, same with the plastic mounting tabs. I have a set off a spare long bed. I have seen ONE truck in my local JY with it and managed a pic. At least it HAD a complete fender, cab edge and bed set. I went back next day to get it and the fenders were GONE.
