Ok so this just happened

I stop to pick up something at the convenience store and my ignition just sort of turns but won't start the truck. What the heck broke? I have had no other signs of trouble. No theft light flashing....ugh. By the way this is on my 2000 7.3l 4x4. If anyone knows or has an idea of what is wrong please let me know asap. Thanks in advance.

As in, it won't turn correctly/is binding/loose? Is it a mechanical issue with the ignition lock? Or is it turning correctly and nothing else is happening? In other words, do you think its a mechanical issue, or an electrical one?

It turns but is loose and it won't cut the power. Almost like the ignition is constantly in the run position.

peppersfords is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
put it in neutral and see if it will start that way. If it does, it's just the connector on the end of the shift lever that needs to stay in contact while in park to start the engine. you can adjust it pretty easily by pulling the bottom panel of the dash beneath the steering wheel/

Update

Well the ignition actuator ended up being the issue. The good news is that my local Ford dealer had the part for $30 . The bad news is that I have to take most of my steering column apart . Not the worst thing that could have happened. Thanks to everyone who gave me help especially Seville009. Well off to be a contortionist and try to get this done before work tomorrow. Wish me luck. Happy Monday everyone.

Update #2

Well the job is done. Had to take a day off work but it is done. It wasn't the most difficult job but it definitely had some challenges. I don't know if it is just me but I think the truck starts quicker now. Probably just my perception. Just know this if you have to do this job have a good set of torx bits, the cheap ones break.
