2016 F150 Ecoboost 3.5 P0420 and P0430

Just bought
2016 F150 Ecoboost last week with 138k miles.
Drove it home a few hundred miles and no issues
Few days later CEL with
P0420
Mechanic checked o2 sensors and said they were still ok. We ended up replacing the cat as it was below threshold with an OEM Ford Cat
Cleared the code, drove for 30 miles and CEL comes back but now with a P0430 code for the other left catalytic converter being below threshold. Has anyone else had an issue like this? Should I go ahead and replace the o2 sensors this time along with the left catalytic converter? Could it be another issue that the mechanic may be overlooking?
Thanks

If one is bad at those miles, they will both be bad. It’s a good excuse to get an aftermarket downpipe with high flow cats.

Get the other cat replaced and put new 02 sensors in.
Also, it’s about time to replace the spark plugs and coils. These are items that you can do yourself if you want to save some money.

Were the fluids changed beforehand.

How about the air filter and serpentine belt?

Is it necessary to replace the coils along with the spark plugs? No signs of it running bad.

That's the first I heard of them being an issue. No question that the O2 sensors are a common wear item. I would not be surprised to see the cats having issues after 135K miles. The driving conditions (around town vs highway) can have a significant impact on their longevity.

The cats should last well past 200k if not the life of the truck. Your issues are caused because of misfires and this is always the outcome. The 3.5 needs plugs and boots routinely at 60k max intervals. If not the fuel pools in the turbos and will melt the matrix in the catalyst. The coils should be fine but the boots are required when doing the plugs.

are the boots sold separately from the coils?
Have this part number for the coil and boot
BL3Z-12029-C

No, it’s not required but that’s just something that I’d do when purchasing a vehicle with so many miles. Nothing wrong with starting with a new and fresh ignition system for the next 100K miles plus you’ll eliminate that being a potential source of your problems.

But the EcoBoost can't run 100k on plugs that's well known. They just low grade misfire and burn the cats out. General consensus here is every 60k with boots. The smallest carbon tracking will cause misfires. There was a TSB for all 3.5 engines built prior to 2014. Below is the carbon tracking condition

Not to hijack, but if the cats should go past 200k, what are your thoughts on cats getting oil burned through them for 28-30k miles?

My thoughts are the life of the cats have been severely reduced. The reduction of ZDDP and phosphorus in SN oil is to combat the destruction of palladium used in modern systems but isn't really meant to deal with that much oil consumption.
