HELP!!! Changed fuel filter, won't start.

I have a 1993 7.3 IDI. I changed the fuel filter, now it won't start. Everything was working fine before hand. I took the new filter off and the filter is full of fuel. I am guessing the fuel line from the filter to the engine might have air in it? Is there only one fuel filter on he 1993 IDI? Anyone ever have the same situation?

Any responses would be greatly appreciate.

So, on your fuel filter mount there. There is a small shrader valve that looks kinda like what you put air in a tire with. Did you try to bleed the air through that? The procedure if you have not, is to have somebody try to crank it while you use say any sharp enough and strong object (a pen works) to open that valve and let the air bubble out. Once fuel starts coming out you are good.

Crack about five or six injector lines at the injectors, just a half turn or so and crank on it until they're squirting out fuel then tighten them back down. Apply full throttle while you're doing this.

Vegetable0, you nailed it!!!! Thank you.

I took a screw driver, my brother cranked the engine while I depressed the Schrader valve. Lots of air until I got a full stream of diesel coming out of the valve. Took 4 tries of trying to start the engine. Then it fired up and purred like a kitten.

Thank you so much.

Glad to hear it, if it ever happens and the valve can't get all the air out. Darkovercast posted the next step to clear it all out. But I am glad it was the easy one.

I've had to explain cracking injector lines so much, that I made a post that details the process: How to Crack Injector Lines and Purge Air on a 6.9 / 7.3 IDI Diesel Engine ? IDI Online Glad it didn't have to go that far.

a trick i use is to fill the new filter before putting it on, this way the system will not run dry while the lift pump fills the new filter up.
