Did I Break my Rear End?

Hi all,

Just got done taking off my rear brake drums to see what I had for rear brakes and figure out what is going on with my non functional E-Brake.

After getting off the left drum I proceeded with the right which was not as stubborn as the left. I used penetrating oil and a dead blow rubber hammer to remove both drums.

Now, I have no drive train. When I turn the rear axle, the drive shaft no longer moves!

So, what is anyone's guess as to what I must have broke in the differential while pounding on the brake drums??? Did the axle brake somewhere in the tube, or did something else let loose? Where should I start to look?

Thanks for any and all responses. Kind of feeling bummed out since most everything has been going so well with the resurrection.

Get a friend to hold onto the axle on one side while you try to turn the axle on the other side...your differential will be miraculously healed.

Gee, has this been another senior moment!!! Just went out and turned the drive shaft and watched the axle ends turn. Dah! Sooo, it was the drag of the remaining right drum letting me turn the left axle and watch the drive shaft move.

I am starting to think that it might be time to stop dicking around with mechanical devices before I hurt myself!

Thanks guys.

A whole video on the differential and why you didn't break it:

Make sure you have the vehicle blocked up firmly, heavy duty jackstands wheel chocks both front and rear of each tire and work away. - It's the only way you will learn - Ask lots of questions - With all the members with all the Trucks we have there isn't anything we haven't screwed up at least once
